Dr Fiona Desmond is a staff specialist anaesthetist at Austin Health.

After completing her specialist training in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine in Ireland in 2013, she concentrated her final year on paediatric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, completing a fellowship in same in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children (Crumlin) in Dublin in 2012. 

After relocating to Melbourne in 2013 to pursue further training, Fiona completed fellowships in paediatric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine in the Royal Children’s Hospital. She further completed fellowships in liver transplantation, hepatobiliary and cardiac anaesthesia at the Austin Hospital. Fiona was appointed as a staff specialist anaesthetist at Austin Health in 2016, providing anaesthesia services for liver transplantation, cardiac anaesthesia, and is the clinical lead in paediatric anaesthesia. Fiona joined the Albert Street Anaesthesia Group in 2020. 

Fiona’s interests include paediatric, cardiac, hepatobiliary and liver transplant anaesthesia. Fiona has undergone further training in advanced perioperative trans-oesophageal echocardiography and holds certification status with the National Board of Echocardiography in the United States. She is an instructor with Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Australia, regularly teaching on courses and teaching trainees at Austin Health. She completed a Masters in Healthcare Administration with Monash University in 2019 and has an interest in clinical governance and audit. She continues to participate in research with the Austin anaesthesia department and publishes regularly. 

Outside of work, Fiona’s interests include pilates, travelling and visiting family and friends in Ireland and her dog, Barry. 

Fiona is a member of SPANZA (Society of Paediatric Anaesthesia in New Zealand and Australia), DEA (Doctors for the Environment), ESA (European Society of Anaesthesiology) and ESPA (European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology).
