Dr Al Motavalli graduated from medical school in 2003, and spent his undergraduate clinical training years at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Training in anaesthesia commenced in 2006 through the Royal Melbourne Hospital anaesthesia training scheme and he became a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2011. He undertook sub-speciality fellowship training in the fields of neuroanaesthesia and ophthalmic anaesthesia. He was subsequently appointed supervisor of anaesthetic training at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital for four years, and was an ANZCA Education Officer. In order to maximise his contribution to quality and safety in healthcare, he has completed a Master of Science in Human Factors and System Safety, as well as a Master of Health Professional Education. He has published academic journal articles and been an invited speaker in the areas of education, medical informatics and cognitive systems engineering. He is also an invited lecturer at Deakin University, educating healthcare professionals about anaesthesia for neurosurgery.
